Looking Ahead #1

By Dan Cristelli

As we progress through The List together, I feel it is important to take a look at the next book and see if I can answer a few questions:

  1. Why did I buy this book?
  2. Why haven’t I read this book?
  3. How am I feeling about jumping in to this book?

These posts will also give me a chance to update you on the progress I’m making on the book I’m currently reading, which will hopefully fill in some thoughts between “I’m reading this now” and “here’s a review of the book”.

Currently Reading: Network Effect (The Murderbot Diaries, #5) by Martha Wells

My Progress: I only have about 50 pages left in this book, so I should finish up tonight. I have to say that if I’m about to embark on a string of books that I’ve put off reading for one reason or another? This is a good novel to end my “leisure reading” time. It’s a really well done series about a security robot that goes rogue and has to learn how to fit in with humans.

Up Next: The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie, purchased on 11/24/2013

Why I Purchased This Book: There are two answers here. The first will become an all-too-common refrain – it was on sale. The second is a little more of a stretch. At the time I owned (but had not read) another book by this author, and had heard excellent things about his work. I saw this one on sale, it was set in the same world, so I made the purchase.

Why I Haven’t Read This Book: Ah, well, that aforementioned book I already owned? I couldn’t get into it and neither could my book club. I’m not sure if it was just not the right time, or if I was suffering from a book club hangover (I’ll get to that in a later post)…but I just couldn’t get drawn into the story at all. So this one sat. And sat. And…well, here we are almost seven years later.

How Am I Feeling About Reading This Book: Not jazzed, if I’m to be honest. My hesitation is solely based upon my experience with that previous novel and, to be fair, I can’t really recall what led me not to finish.

Here we go! The first book up is one I’m not terribly excited about, but it’s time to give it a shot and check a book off The List!
