Waiting a month or more to write a review is…problematic.
This was the first book I’ve purchased in a year and a half. Given how my habits were going prior to starting this project, that’s an achievement all on its own. I had recently finished the seventh and eighth books in the Rivers of London series, so when this was released I thought it would be good to keep things fresh in my head.
When I’m nine books deep into a series, the chances of me disliking a book drop dramatically. It’s not impossible (**cough cough Wheel of Time cough**), but for the most part I’m in for the long haul. To date I’ve enjoyed the Rivers of London books quite a bit, although I was getting a little bit of plot fatigue from the Leslie May/Faceless Man stories that were straining my ability to keep things straight over a few years worth of reading.
I know that’s mostly a me thing, but it made some of the later books in the series a little more difficult to enjoy fully. For the most part, this one works to get back to the “mystery of the week” type story that the first few books were based upon, which was much more enjoyable. There’s certainly still an undercurrent of something larger, but it wasn’t just an entire book working away at that.
One thing I kept an eye out for was a previous criticism I had where Peter would say “looking back we should have blah blah blah” which got to be a little distracting. Thankfully this wasn’t used nearly as much and things flowed along pretty handily.
Final Thoughts: Another good entry to this series, recommended for anyone that has enjoyed the previous titles.
