Looking Ahead #2

By Dan Cristelli

Before hopping in to this look ahead, a quick reminder about what these posts are for: I’ll be updating you on the book I’m currently reading, and answering these questions about the next book on the list:

  1. Why did I buy this book?
  2. Why haven’t I read this book?
  3. How am I feeling about jumping in to this book?

Currently Reading: The Heroes by Joe Abercombie

My Progress: SIGH. Look, I didn’t expect to be invoking Rule Three with the very first book on the list, but here we are. This is just not for me, and I’m coming to terms with the fact that it’s okay to walk away. I’ll talk more about it in my review. I’m about 15% of the way done, and that’s probably it for this one.

Up Next: Crux by Ramez Naam, purchased on 1/4/2014. I will be skipping the next chronological book, which is A Dance with Dragons by George R. R. Martin. There’s a slew of issues with me reading that:

  • It’s been several years since I finished A Feast for Crows and I just don’t remember what happened.
  • The HBO series will certainly lead to me conflating details between the books and the show.
  • Who knows when or if he will ever complete this series.

Why I Purchased This Book: The first book in this series, Nexus, was one that my book club read and really enjoyed. That made picking this up a lot easier…and it was $1.99 so once again we see that Dan can’t resist cheap books.

Why I Haven’t Read This Book: This will make a great blog post for the future, but my book club was both directly responsible for me purchasing this book, and for me not reading this book. I promise I’ll get into more detail about this at a future date.

How Am I Feeling About Reading This Book: Pretty good, actually. I found a really comprehensive review of the first book to refresh my memory, and I already own the final book in the trilogy, so that one will get slotted in after I finish Crux.

You know…as long as it isn’t a complete dud.
