When a book fails to grab me I start to think about the reasons why. In this case, I think there were a few factors at play, and only some of them were really the book’s fault. But at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter why I didn’t want to finish the book…the only thing that matters is that I am able to put a book down after giving it a shot.
This is only the second invoking of Rule Three, so I’m still working through how to speak about titles that get nixed. I think the best approach is to keep it brief and touch on why I’m moving on.
I vividly remember purchasing this book. This was a book club selection, and I wound up purchasing the Kindle edition during our meeting. My friend that selected the book said that he had heard that it was pretty decent, and it fit with our genres, so we agreed to give it a shot. I didn’t start the book right away, and was a bit surprised to see a group message from my friend a few days later. Basically, he stated that we should feel free to skip the book because he wasn’t going to finish it…so I never started.
With that in my head, I always skipped past this one when looking through my collection for something to read. And when it finally came up in the rotation for this project? That was still in my head. So I was very much predisposed to not give this book a neutral reading.
That being said, I just couldn’t get into the story. I found the characters to be a bit flat, the narrative style felt a bit disjointed, and the plot just didn’t grab me. From the character standpoint I don’t feel like this book really had a chance given that it followed The Gods of Blood and Powder trilogy. The other two complaints, however, stand on their own.
Time is precious, so I’ll give this one a pass.
Final Thoughts: A bit thin, didn’t grab me, moving on.
